My hairdresser is amazing. She works in Concord, New Hampshire. I have yet to find anyone better. So yes, I wait to have my hair cut and colored when I am in New Hampshire.
I have been to three different hairdressers in DC. Three! None of them even compare. The first one left color on my skin. How crappy is that!? $180 later and you are gonna have me walking out of your place looking like that? Puh-lease.
The second could not get my hair color right. I don't know how many times I had to tell him the color needed to be altered. Ehh.
Number three (and four) is good, but EXPENSIVE. And down here it is not uncommon to have one stylist color your hair and another cut it. Oh, and another washes it. By the time I leave I've shelled out about $200, and am left wondering why my hair isn't gradually turning into strands of gold.
So anytime I am in New Hampshire I go see Mandy. Mandy has a sign that says, "I not a magician. I'm a beautician." She is a magician though. She colors and cuts my hair all for under $100, and IT'S PERFECT!
Back to the real reason I am writing this post. All four hairdressers agree on one thing: my hair should not be washed everyday. In fact, they have all said most people wash their hair too often, and the longer you can go without washing, drying, and straightening your hair, the better!
I really hate washing my hair, so I have no problem following their advice. I have a lot of hair and it's long. So it is quite a process to get it smooth and straight, or smooth and wavy. It is a damn workout actually.
So how do you deal with hair that may not be squeaky clean, but not ready to be washed? Three options:
1. Ponytail.
2. Headband. You could even do a ponytail with a headband.
3. Powder. I understand, it sounds a little gross. If you do it right though, you could easily save yourself 40 minutes in the morning and save your tresses from another round of abuse.
What you want to avoid with the powder is the Marie Antoinette. Let me explain...
A brilliant friend introduced me to powder. She told me how she sprinkles and brushes. Pure genius! I asked my hairdresser, and she gave me the thumbs up. It might sound silly, but it works!
Well one early morning in the office, my genius my friend came out of the bathroom looking, well, very "royal". We had a tough night (read between the lines). So the fact she had lip gloss on was huge. The fact we were standing and talking in complete sentences, and even giggling was huge.
As I helped my friend remove the extra the powder from her hair all I could think of was Marie Antoinette and her powdered coiffures. What a freakin mess that was. I wonder if Marie had friends brushing out her extra powder. Probably not. I am guessing a servant had the pleasure of unpowdering Her Majesty.
So with the powder, go easy. It is a whole lot easier to add more. ;)
